2015 Volkswagen Touareg - Exterior design and features

The Touareg is one of the world's most successful premium-class SUVs. Within one decade, Volkswagen sold around 720,000 units of the high-class sport utility vehicle; last year alone over 70,000 drivers chose a new Touareg, which combines the best of the passenger car and off-road worlds in one concept. Now, Volkswagen is presenting a world premiere of a further advanced version of the Touareg at 2014 Auto China in Beijing.

The 2014 generation can be made out by the new front and rear designs and by its new colours and wheels. In terms of technology, all V6 TDI versions now come equipped with an automatic post-collision braking system (helps prevent a secondary collision in case of an accident), bi-xenon headlights and a coasting function. While coasting, the engine is decoupled from the 8-speed automatic gearbox to utilise the car's kinetic energy on mountain descents or in driving phases in which acceleration is not needed. Aerodynamic refinements and the introduction of new tyres optimi sed for low rolling resistance also improve fuel economy in everyday operation. The V6 TDI engines of the Touareg were converted so that they fulfil the EU-6 emissions standard that takes effect in 2015 in Europe.

2015 Volkswagen Touareg - Technical perfection

The standard steel-spring running gear was optimised; improvements include more agile steering response and a gain in comfort. An air suspension is available as an option for the Touareg; it can be used, for instance, to increase the vehicle's ground clearance by up to 300 mm in off-road driving. At higher speeds (from 140 km/h), the body is automatically lowered by the air suspension. Further developed was ACC adaptive cruise control with Front Assist including City Emergency Braking (now with stop-and-go function).

2015 Volkswagen Touareg - Upgraded and networked

The interior of the versatile all-round vehicle is marked by new features, including new accents, leather colours, lighting solutions and controls. In conjunction with the RNS 850 radio-navigation system and mobile phone preparation, the Touareg will launch with "mobile online services" starting this autumn in Europe. In the initial phase, the following will be available: Points-of-Interest (POI) search via Google, map display via Google Earth™ mapping service, Google Street View™ functionality and "online traffic information". The latest version of the Touareg will launch on the market in diesel (TDI), petrol (FSI and TSI) and hybrid (TSI plus e-motor) models this summer.

2015 Volkswagen Touareg - Exterior design and features

The front-end design of the Touareg was completely redeveloped. Especially distinctive are the headlights which are now larger; moreover, bi-xenon headlights are now standard on all versions of the Touareg. The trapezoid-shaped lights create a line towards the re-designed radiator grille in the middle of the vehicle. In contrast to the previous model, the grille is trimmed with four transverse chrome fins instead of two ; the two lower fins are visually extended into the headlights.

Together, the radiator grille and headlights form a prominent wide band. Designed as a parallel line beneath it is the new bumper, which is now styled for a more horizontal effect. The new design gives the Touareg an even wider and more impressive appearance. Fitting into this visual image is the lower area of the bumper with its completely new look. As on the new Scirocco R, the 280-PS sports car from Volkswagen, the lower air inlet now forms a stylised "A" instead of a "V" that transitions into the side air inlets to the right and left. This gives the new Touareg a fuller stance on the road.

When the "Chrome & Style" package is ordered, there is a chrome strip on the next level, which is continued into the side and rear body sections. Beneath this strip are the newly designed fog lights that are coord inated with the new bumper design. At the bottom level, there is a new front spoiler which perfects the aerodynamics of the underbody and the front wheels.

2015 Volkswagen Touareg - Rear section

From the rear, the more precise styling of the Touareg is marked by its new, cleanly designed bumper, which - similar to the same area at the front end - emphasises the width of the SUV. When the "Chrome & Style" package is ordered, a wrap-around chrome strip is integrated in the bumper. Integrated between the exhaust tailpipes is a diffuser that has also been redesigned. Designers have relocated the LED rear fog lights to the bumper, which - as in the previous model - also integrates the rear reflectors. Visual highlights in the area of the boot lid, viewed from bottom to top, are the re-designed VW badge and a sharpened character line between the rear lights (LED optional).

2015 Volkswagen Touareg - Side profile

From the sides, the Touareg is distinguished by two new wheel designs. The 18-inch wheel of the new model generation is the "Arica" alloy wheel whose distinctive and sporty look includes ten spokes. The 20-inch "Masafi" alloy wheels, on the other hand, have five twin spokes. Supplementing the optional windows that absorb 65 per cent of the light, there is an option for 90 per cent light-absorbing rear glass which gives an almost opaque appearance to those looking in from the outside.

2015 Volkswagen Touareg - Colours

Volkswagen is offering the latest Touareg in a total of twelve body colours; five of these colours are new to the programme: "Light Silver Metallic", "Sand Gold Metallic", "Moonlight Blue Metallic", "Black Oak Brown Metallic" and "Reef Blue Metallic".

2015 Volkswagen Touareg - Interior design and features

The interior of the Touareg reflects an extraordinary alliance of rugged SUV elements and sophisticated premium-class elements. SUV elements in the Touareg include the aluminium rotary knobs for the Climatronic system, running gear adjustment, air suspension, radio-navigation system, mirror adjustment and the air vent knobs - they have now all been replaced by a new style of rotary knob, which has been perfected both to look and to touch. Also conspicuous is the white - rather than red - illumination of all controls. Also new: chrome accents around the control panel modules and the running gear adjustment controls. Above the infotainment system, the central push button/display bar on the centre console was extended; previously, the three elements: "Park Distance Control" (PDC), hazard warning unit and status display "Passenger airbag off" were the controls here, from left to right. Now, a new switch for steering wheel heating has been added to the left of the PDC push button, and the new push button for windscreen heating has been integrated to the right of the passenger airbag indicator. New in the area of the front seats: a manual lumbar support adjustment for the entry-level Touareg model.

2015 Volkswagen Touareg - Upholstery materials and accents

The line-up of upholstery materials and wood accents was also extended. Consider the "Vienna leather": a fourth colour, "Bonanza Brown" (dark brown), is now offered in addition to the colours "Titan black", "Corn Silk Beige" and "Natural Brown". Besides these four colours, there is also the very elegant "Nappa leather" which can now be ordered in the new colour "St. Tropez" (light sand hue). Also new: the two fine wood accents "Sapelli Mahagoni" and "Engineered Ebony".

Extensive range of standard features. The V6 FSI and V6 TDI models come from the factory equipped with standard features such as bi-xenon headlights (new for all versions), all-wheel drive, 17-inch alloy wheels (size 235 tyres), cruise control system with multifunction steering wheel, RCD 550 infotainment system with touchscreen, stop-start system, regenerative braking, coasting function, climate control system (Climatronic), servo steering and ESC with trailer stabilisation function. The V8 versions and the Touareg Hybrid are distinguished by extra standard features such as 18-inch alloy wheels (size 255 tyres), the "Chrome & Style" design package, comfort seats in "Vienna leather", fine wood accents, electric opening and closing function for the boot lid, anti-theft warning system and the Keyless Access locking and engine starting system. Also factory-installed is a rear bench seat that offers 160 mm of longitudinal adjustment; the seat backrest angle can also be adjusted. The rear bench seat can be electrically unlatched as an option; this folds it down in seconds and frees up 1,642 litres of cargo capacity.

2015 Volkswagen Touareg - Sporty R-Line

In late summer 2014, Volkswagen will also be launching the very sporty R-Line features packages (exterior and interior). The R-Line exterior package upgrades the outside of the SUV and includes such features as 19-inch alloy wheels ("Salvador" design; other 19-, 20- and 21-inch wheels available as options), bumpers in R-Line design (front bumper in st yle of Touareg V8 versions), glossy black air inlets with additional chrome trim, side sill extensions, glossy black diffuser at rear (also with additional chrome trim), chrome tailpipes for the Touareg V8 versions and a rear spoiler that is as distinctive as it is sporty. In addition, an R-Line decal in the radiator grille screen signposts the car's dynamic features.

The R-Line interior package adds the following to the Touareg: a sport steering wheel, R-Line "Silver Lane" inlays, R-Line door sill plates, stainless steel pedal caps and tinted rear windows. The package can also be optionally extended to include a black rooflining, black piano finish i nlays and sport seat system in "Nappa leather" (two-tone) or "Alcantara/Nappa" with the R logo on the head restraints (Germany: interior package and extension do not include tinted rear windows or piano finish).

2015 Volkswagen Touareg - High-tech SUV

The Touareg offers numerous assistance and convenience systems to the most innovative SUV on the market. Some examples: its parking brake is activated at the push of a button. The motor oil level is electronically displayed in the Touareg. Automatic opening and closing of the boot lid is optional. The largest panoramic sliding sunroof of any SUV brings ample light into the car even on overcast days. The Area View assistance system recognises the surrounding environment of the Touareg via four cameras, which adds to the vehicle's safety. Up to nine airbags offer all-round protection.

Lane Assist ensures that the vehicle does not stray from the proper path; and Side Assist warns of vehicles approaching from the rear when changing lanes. ACC adaptive cruise control plus Front Assist with City Emergency Braking brakes to a standstill if necessary. The PreCrash occupant protection system networks the assistance systems and ensures that in case of an accident not only are the belts tensioned, but - if lateral dynamics indicate this is necessary - the windows and the panoramic sunroof are closed. Also innovative are the bi-xenon headlights with optional Dynamic Light Assist. This camera-based main-beam control system "sees" oncoming traffic and vehicles driving ahead and automatically controls the main beam lights, individually for each headlight - via The cornering light module - without producing gla re for others in traffic. Altogether, the sum of these parts makes the Touareg one of the safest vehicles ever.

2015 Volkswagen Touareg - Engine and all-wheel drive technology

The all-wheel drive Touareg is available - depending on the sales region - as a model with a turbodiesel (V6 and V8 TDI), petrol (V6 and V8 FSI), turbocharged petrol (V6 TSI) or Hybrid (V6 TSI & electric motor) drive system. The V6 engines come with an 8-speed automatic gearbox. All engines have a stop-start system as standard; they also ut ilise regenerative braking to recover kinetic energy.

2015 Volkswagen Touareg - 4MOTION

In the base version, all Touareg vehicles have the 4MOTION all-wheel drive system with Torsen differential lock (max. climbing angle: 31 degrees). In addition, all Touareg versions have an off-road driving programme that is operated via a two-stage rotary switch. It configures the ABS, EDS and ASR systems for off-road use and activates hill climb assist and gearshift points of the automatic gearbox.

As an option, customers can order the Touareg V6 TDI with 190 kW / 258 PS with the Terrain Tech package; in this case, instead of a Torsen differential the vehicle is equipped with a differential that is designed to be even more sturdy for off-road use. It includes a reduction gear stage and central a nd rear differential locks that offer up to 100 per cent locking (4XMOTION: max. climbing angle of 45 degrees). This version has a five-stage turn wheel which the driver uses to configure the SUV for different uses.

European diesel - V6 TDI with SCR-DPF catalytic converter and V8 TDI

In Europe, customers can choose from three TDI engines and the Touareg Hybrid. The TDI engines produce 150 kW / 204 PS, 190 kW / 258 PS (10 kW more now) and 250 kW / 340 PS. The Touareg Hybrid has a total system power output o f 279 kW / 380 PS. The two V6 TDI engines will now conform to the EU6 emissions standard that takes effect in September 2015. As part of this Conversion, the two engines are now equipped with a new SCR-DPF catalytic converter module, an SCR metering module (AdBlue) and an additional blocking catalytic converter (removes excess ammonia); in addition, the emission control system has an oxidation catalytic converter.

At the same time, fuel consumption of the 204-PS V6 TDI BlueMotion Technology version was redu ced from 7.0 l/100 km (equates to 184 g/km CO 2) to 6.6 l/100 km (174 g/km CO 2). As mentioned, the power was boosted in the 258-PS version: The "large" V6 TDI now develops 10 kW / 13 PS more power; and yet its fuel consumption was reduced from 7.2 l/100 km (equates to 189 g/km CO2) to 6.8 l/100 (178 g/km CO2). The most powerful diesel continues to be the V8 TDI with 250 kW / 340 PS.

European petrol engines - hybrid drive with V6 TSI and electric motor

In Europe, Volkswagen is offering the Touareg Hybrid, which has a 245 kW / 333 PS V6 TSI (turbocharged direct petrol injection engine) together with a 38 kW / 52 PS electric motor. When the two drive sources are working together (boosting), the maximum system power of 279 kW / 380 PS and maximum torque of 580 Newton metres are attained. Despite that, the Touareg Hybrid sets the benchmark among fully-fledged off-road SUVs with a petrol engine with a fuel consumption figure of just 8.2 l/100 km (equates to 193 g/km CO2). It can drive at speed up to 50 km/h in all-electric driving - with zero emissions. Like all Touareg versions, the Hybrid version is also designed for trailer loads of up to 3.5 metric tonnes.

Global petrol and diesel engines - V6 and V8 engines

In Asia, the new Touareg is being offered with three petrol and two diesel engines. The petrol engines for China produce 213 kW / 290 PS and 235 kW / 320 PS (both V6 TSI) and 265 kW / 360 PS (V8 TSI). For Russia, Volkswagen offers the new Touareg with two petrol engines; they develop 183 kW / 249 PS (V6 FSI) and - as in China - 265 kW / 360 PS (V8 FSI). In the USA and Canada, Volkswagen will offer versions of the Touareg with a V6 FSI ( 206 kW / 280 PS), a Hybrid drive system (279 kW / 380 PS) and a V6 TDI (176 kW / 239 PS).

Fuel consumption reduced by up to six per cent

Thanks to extensive aerodynamic improvements (such as air inlet openings in front, modified door mirror caps, new wheel spoiler), tyres optimised for low rolling resistance and standard 8-speed automatic gearbox optimised for low friction, Volkswagen was able to improve the fuel efficiency of the Touareg by up to six per cent (V6 TDI with 150 kW).

In everyday driving, fuel consumption is also reduced by an optimised stop-start system (engine is stopped at speeds under 7 km/h now) and by the regenerative braking function. In addition, a standard coasting function for the V6 versions (until now only available with the Touareg Hybrid) optimises fuel economy in everyday driving. How it works: as soon as the driver releases the accelerator pedal, the engine is decoupled from the gearbox; this is also known as "coasting". This is even possible at vehicle speeds up to 130 km/h, so it can be used in motorway driving.

2015 Volkswagen e-Golf - Interior, Exterior, Specs and Photos

2015 Volkswagen e-Golf - Interior Exterior Specs

Volkswagen is electrifying Europe's most successful car ever: the Golf. The best seller with sales of over 30 million units to its name thus marches on to become the Volkswagen e-Golf with drive technology that delivers zero tailpipe emissions. Volkswagen is celebrating the world premiere of the e-Golf at the 2013 International Motor Show in Frankfurt. Also making its public debut at the IAA is another battery-powered electric Volkswagen, the e-up!. From now on, Volkswagen will thus be offering in its vehicles every form of drive system relevant in the world today.

2015 Volkswagen e-Golf Agile and efficient

Both agile and efficient, the Volkswagen e-Golf demonstrates best-in-class qualities from the off, leading the way with a low power consumption figure of 12.7 kW/100 km. Thanks to a particularly innovative overall technological system, improved aerodynamics (cD = 0.281) and perfected rolling resistance, the Volkswagen is thus 10 per cent more energy-efficient than the best steel-built direct competitor. As a result, the e-Golf will be cruising as of spring 2014 (when the European launch begins) extremely economically around the cities of the world (launches in Asia and North America follow in late 2014 / early 2015). Energy costs: around €3.28 per 100 km.

First Volkswagen with all-LED headlights

The very well equipped four-door e-Golf (with a specification which includes the high-end 'Discover Pro' radio/navigation system, a heated windscreen, automatic climate control, parking heater/ventilation, leather steering wheel) is recognisable at once by the aerodynamically optimised 'Astana' alloy wheels and - being used by Volkswagen for the first time - by its LED headlights (both standard on all models). The LED headlights are more energy-efficient than xenon systems, yet produce even more light. Also highly energy-efficient are the likewise standard LED daytime running lights with their C-shaped design, a signature feature of the company's electric vehicles. Another striking feature is the bottom strip across the radiator grille. As on the Golf GTI, but in this case blue rather than red, this strip carries on into the headlights - an element that, like the 'Think Blue.' campaign, consciously underlines the electrically powered Golf's environmentally friendly efficiency.

A good companion in mobile everyday life

The fact that practically all of the Golf's driver assistance systems - innovations such as ACC Adaptive Cruise Control and City Emergency Braking - are available for the e-Golf as well as the conventionally powered models underlines the fact that this Volkswagen is a very safe and exceptionally comfortable companion to take drivers into the era of zero-emission mobility.

e-motor and single-speed gearbox

The Volkswagen e-Golf is powered by an 85 kW / 115 PS electric motor. From a standing start the synchronous motor, internally called the EEM 85, develops an impressive maximum torque of 270 Nm. Top performance figures are the result: the Volkswagen reaches a speed of 60 km/h within 4.2 seconds, and after just 10.4 seconds the e-Golf is up to 100 km/h. A fascinating factor here is the pull-away performance, which is extremely comfortable and totally free of any delay. On the motorway the top speed levels off, electronically limited, at 140 km/h1.

2015 Volkswagen e-Golf - Made in Germany

The high-performance 12,000-rpm motor and, also developed by Volkswagen, the single-speed gearbox (EQ 270) with integrated differential and mechanical parking brake form a compact module. The motor/gearbox unit is made in Volkswagen's components plant in Kassel, Germany.

Up to 190 km on one battery charge

Depending on route profile, driving style and payload, the driving range is between 130 and 190 km1; at very low outdoor temperatures, driving range may lie below these figures. Good range will be ensured not only in fine weather but in the winter too by a newly developed, optional heat pump. Offered as an add-on module for the electric heating (high-voltage heater) and the electric air conditioning compressor, the heat pump utilises both the heat from the ambient air and the heat given off by the drive system components. In this way the high-voltage heater's consumption of electric power is significantly reduced. Through use of the heat pump the e-Golf's range increases in winter by up to 20 per cent.

MQB has already paved the way

The Golf Mk7 was developed from the outset as a version which could use an electric powertrain. By virtue of the innovative flexibility of the new Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB), on which the current Golf design is based, Volkswagen was able to integrate the lithium-ion battery in space-saving fashion within a stabilising frame in the vehicle floor (under the front and rear seats and in the area of the centre tunnel). Like the motor elements of the powertrain, the battery was also developed in-house at Volkswagen.

264 cells delivering 24.2 kWh

The Volkswagen e-Golf has a kerb weight of 1,510 kg, of which 318 kg are accounted for by the lithium-ion battery. It is made up of a total of 264 individual cells, which are integrated into 27 modules (each with six or twelve cells). The cells add up to a nominal voltage of 323 V. Battery capacity: 24.2 kWh. The battery is fitted at the front with a battery management controller (BMC), which performs safety diagnosis and monitoring functions and also regulates the temperature balance in the battery junction controller (the interface to the motor's energy supply). When the car is not in use or in the event of a crash, power from the battery is automatically cut off.

2015 Volkswagen e-Golf - Power electronics

A central element of the drive system is the power electronics module. Acting as the link, this module controls the flow of high-voltage energy between the e-motor and the lithium-ion battery (depending on battery voltage between 250 and up to 430 V). In the process the power electronics module converts the direct current (DC) stored in the battery into alternating current (AC). The power electronics therefore have the following interfaces: the traction circuit connection to the battery; the 3-phase connection to the e-motor; the plug connector from the DC/DC converter to the 12-V power circuit; and a connection for the high-voltage power distributor.

Socket, wall box or charging station

As with the smaller e-up!, there are several different ways of charging the battery in the e-Golf. As the conventional solution, the charging cable supplied as standard with the car is plugged into a 230-volt mains electrical socket. The battery of the e-Golf is charged in this way at a charge level of 2.3kW of alternating current (AC) from the mains. If it is completely flat, it will be fully charged again within a maximum of 13 hours. As an optional extra Volkswagen is offering a wall box for the garage or carport. This charges at a level of 3.6 kW. If completely flat (which in practice is rare), the battery would thus be fully charged again after around eight hours. There are also public charging stations that 'refuel' electric cars at a power level of 3.6 kW. The e-Golf can also optionally be prepared for the combined charging system (CCS) using a DC power supply. In this case the Volkswagen can be recharged via special CCS charging stations at power levels of up to 40 kW, allowing the battery to be charged to 80 per cent in around 30 minutes. On the e-Golf the start of the charging process can be activated - immediately or delayed by programming the time - by pressing a button next to the charging socket under the 'fuel cap'.

Driving profiles and regenerative braking

Two technologies of primary importance in relation to optimal utilisation of the vehicle's energy are the two driving profiles designed for energy economy ('Eco' and 'Eco+') and the four different levels of regenerative braking ('D1', 'D2', 'D3, and 'B').

'Eco' and 'Eco+' driving profiles

The Volkswagen e-Golf is equipped as standard with three driving profiles: 'Normal', 'Eco' and 'Eco+'. The Volkswagen is automatically started in 'Normal' mode. For drivers wanting to extend the range, the first option is the 'Eco' mode. The effects of selecting this mode include paring back the e-motor's maximum power output to 70 kW and the starting torque to 220 Nm. In parallel, the electronics reduce the output of the air conditioning system and modify the response curve of the accelerator pedal. The e-Golf can now reach speeds of up to 115 km/h (in 'Normal' mode: 140 km/h1) and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 13.1 seconds (in 'Normal' mode: 10.4 seconds). In 'Eco+' mode the electronics limit the power output to 55 kW and the starting torque to 175 Nm. At the same time the accelerator pedal response curve becomes even flatter and the air conditioning is switched off. The e-Golf now reaches a top speed of 90 km/h and accelerates at a correspondingly slower rate. Nevertheless, via kick-down - in 'Eco' and 'Eco+' mode - drivers can still obtain full power, maximum torque and a top speed of 140 km/h1.

Regenerative braking in settings 'D1', 'D2', 'D3' and 'B'

In addition to the driving mode function, the range can also be influenced using the regenerative braking system. There are five levels available: 'D' (no regenerative braking), 'D1', D2', 'D3' and 'B'. It works like this: in gear lever setting 'D' the driver simply taps the gear lever knob to the left to switch to 'D1' (1x), 'D2' (2x) or 'D3' (3x). Tapping the knob to the right moves down the D levels. If the gear lever is pushed to the right and briefly held there, the electronics switch in one jump back to 'D'. The driver activates regenerative braking level 'B' by pulling the gear shift lever backwards. In an electric car this number of levels leads to a different way of driving. It is possible to use regenerative braking consciously to slow the e-Golf down. Level 'D1' regenerates energy and slows down the car the least, while level 'B' has the strongest effect. At levels 'D2', 'D3' and 'B', the deceleration via regenerative braking is so strong that in this case the brake lights automatically come on. However, if the battery is fully charged, no energy regeneration takes place. In this case, the braking power also reduces, which the driver can feel intuitively.

Electromechanical brake servo

Volkswagen has developed an electromechanical brake servo for its electric cars. This optimises the driver's braking force in the same way that brake servos do in conventional cars. In the case of the electromechanical brake servo, however, this happens via what is known as 'brake blending' - a process in which low levels of deceleration are produced solely through the e-motor's braking torque. Stronger deceleration, meanwhile, is achieved through joint braking torque from the electric motor and the hydraulic brake system.

Aerodynamics and rolling resistance

By developing very specific measures such as reducing the volume of cooling air (via a radiator shutter and partially enclosed radiator grille), new underbody panelling, modification of the tail with a rear spoiler and C-pillar air guides, and by developing new aerodynamic wheels (largely closing off the wheel openings flush with the car's exterior), Volkswagen was able to lower the Golf's air drag. Whereas on the standard Golf (1.6 TDI with 77 kW) air drag is 0.686 m², the company was able to reduce this to 0.615 m² on the e-Golf, thus improving it by 10 per cent. Similarly, the cD value was improved to 0.281.

Rolling resistance reduced by 10 per cent

Volkswagen was able to achieve another positive effect on energy consumption and range through optimisation of the tyres (205/55 R16 91 Q). Reducing the rolling resistance coefficient from 7.2 per 1,000 (Golf BlueMotion) to 6.5 per 1,000 for the e-Golf (likewise an improvement of 10 per cent) also improves the range.

2015 Volkswagen e-Golf - Acoustics

Electric drive systems present a challenge in relation to acoustics. The reason for this is that as a result of the absence of any internal combustion engine very different sources of noise become noticeable. In addition, the scarcely perceptible and yet very specific background noise of the drive system is joined by the sounds and vibrations of the electrically powered auxiliary components. Last but not least, without any fine tuning, wind and rolling sounds are much more noticeable in electric vehicles, as they are in luxury cars.

As quiet as a luxury car

Against this background Volkswagen implemented an acoustic concept for the e-Golf that is specifically tailored to the characteristics of an electric vehicle, making the zero-emission car into an almost silent cruiser. A few examples: the powerplant suspension system was switched to a pendulum mount with modified response characteristics, which despite the e-motor's high build-up of torque when accelerating greatly enhances the acoustics. Through the design of the motor housing unit Volkswagen was also able to achieve an extremely low level of noise emission. Furthermore the highly sound-absorbent and yet very lightweight materials used in the interior produce such a high level of acoustic comfort that occupants of the e-Golf, itself already a high quality car, feel as though they are riding in a vehicle from the luxury class.

2015 Volkswagen e-Golf - e-exterior

Visually the unique, always four-door Volkswagen e-Golf can be recognised even from a distance by its especially energy-efficient all-LED headlights, being used here as a world first. Compared to xenon headlights the LED system produces more light despite consuming less power. From now on, an identifying feature of Volkswagen electric cars will be the C-shaped designer signature of the LED daytime running lights in the redesigned front bumper. At the rear, the latest Golf can be made out as a zero-emission car by such features as the absence of any exhaust pipes. In addition appropriate model name markings and the VW logo with a blue background also show that the e-Golf is a zero-emission vehicle. Also standard on the car's exterior, as mentioned above, are LED rear lights and the aerodynamically perfectly balanced 16-inch alloy wheels with 205 tyres optimised for low rolling resistance.

2015 Volkswagen e-Golf - e-interior

In addition to the specific fabric design (seats in the 'Merlin e-grey / Clip titanium black' pattern; optionally leather) and the extremely good level of standard equipment (incl. automatic climate control, parking heater/ventilation, high-end Discover Pro radio-navigation system, heated windscreen, leather steering wheel, leather gear knob and elegant 'Iridium Matrix / Dark Magnesium' trim) striking features in the interior of the e-Golf include the new instrument layout and the touchscreen in the centre console, which is also equipped with new functions. In line with the exterior, the interior is also enhanced by blue elements, including the decorative seams of the leather steering wheel and gear knob, plus the floor-mat edgings. As an option the so-called 'Ambience pack' creates a link with the world of 'Think Blue.': it contains LED reading lights, blue footwell illumination, blue ambient lighting around the decorative trim and, of course, door-sill tread plates also illuminated in blue.

2015 Volkswagen e-Golf - e-instruments

On the left-hand side of the instrument cluster the rev counter is replaced by the power display (which indicates if the motor is ready, the battery is being charged via regenerative braking or power is being drawn off) and the indicator of output availability. Still on the right as a corresponding instrument is the speedometer, in this case going up to 160 km/h. Added to the bottom section of the speedometer is an indicator showing the charge level of the high-voltage battery. On the colour display (premium multifunction display) between the power display and the speedometer, features now include a permanent indication of the driving range, of the currently active level of regenerative braking and an indication of the remaining charging time and of the type of charging connection. In a separate LED field in the lower segment of the multifunction display, the 'READY' message also appears after starting the motor, indicating readiness for the car to be driven.

"Those who love extreme sports freely seek new thrills and challenges. To ensure that they make it back in one piece, they prefer high-performance equipment that offers the ultimate sense of freedom and protection," says Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President Design of Volvo Car Group.

"The Volvo XC Coupé Concept is perfectly in tune with this active lifestyle. Its capability and protection is cleverly integrated into the sophisticated looks. Concept XC Coupé is ready and willing to bring you into the adventure zone and back," he adds.

Sleeker and safer at the same time

The three concept cars are designed to demonstrate vital elements of the company's new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA): the confident stance, the proportions and the most prominent design signatures.

"Concept XC Coupé also shows how clever engineering makes it possible for us to reinforce our world-leading safety without compromising design, size or weight. Thanks to the extensive use of high-strength boron steel and structures with new, ingenious decoupling, we can make SPA cars more compact and safer at the same time," says Thomas Ingenlath.

The two-door, four-seater Volvo XC Coupé Concept has a strong connection with its sibling, the Volvo Coupé Concept. However, the larger 21-inch wheels, the more accentuated wheel-arches and the taller roofline all contribute to a more robust impression and a fuller, capable look.

The extended distance between the dashboard and the front axle is still a very powerful visual element. The capable stance is emphasised by details such as the new bonnet and a beltline that spans an elegant bow along the length of the car.

High-tech sport gear

The connection with modern, high-tech sports gear is highly present in the concept car. Among the sources of inspiration for the design team is the Swedish company POC, which develops high-tech protective gear for extreme sports athletes.

"Several orange details and exterior graphics in combination with bold use of matte rubber mouldings, which cover the rear end of the car, add to the highly functional expression of the design," says Thomas Ingenlath.

To strike the right balance between aesthetics and functionality, the design team has also given traditional SUV elements, such as side mouldings and skid plates, a modern interpretation. They are more integrated into the sleek design, flush with the surrounding body areas.

T-shaped DRL lights

Just like the Volvo Coupé Concept, the face of the Volvo XC Coupé Concept is characterised by a new topography on the bonnet and the 'floating' grille, flanked by headlights featuring new T-shaped DRL light guides. The rear light signature is also a distinctive element in the new design direction of Volvo Cars.

"Both concept cars show how we can shape our cars from now on. We add emotional value to the Volvo brand with the calm, confident beauty that is the hallmark of Scandinavian design," says Thomas Ingenlath.

Building on a proud XC heritage

Volvo Cars paved the way for a completely new segment by introducing the V70 Cross Country in 1997. The range has been continuously developed and extended since then. Presently, it spans from the Volvo V40 Cross Country, via the XC60 and XC70, to the XC90.

"With the Volvo XC Coupé Concept, we take this unique blend of capable ruggedness and expressive elegance up to a new, sportier attitude," says Thomas Ingenlath.

The brothers subsequently formed their own Mexico City/Detroit-based design agency, ETXE, which having worked on projects for numerous global brands then penned the 05 - a lightweight supercar for road and track in the vein of the BAC Mono, Ariel Atom, KTM X-Bow etc.

Said Iker: "Our background means the VUHL 05 has been developed by enthusiasts for enthusiasts. We were determined to create a highly intuitive machine that was both stirringly fast and immense fun to drive - a car we ourselves would want to own. We have endeavoured to endow it with class-leading ergonomics and a contemporary silhouette of striking proportions, and the aim of uncompromising build quality has underpinned the project since day one."

"Having decided to start the 2014 DTM season with a new challenger, in the form of the BMW M4 DTM, it was a logical step to have BMW M GmbH put together a BMW M4 Coupé DTM Safety Car," said BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt. "To lead the DTM field out in style, the safety car itself must also be extremely sporty. The BMW M4 Coupé certainly provided us with the basis to achieve this."

To safely guide 23 DTM racing cars around a circuit, the safety car itself must demonstrate ultimate sportiness. A powerful drive train, high-performance chassis and perfect handling in any weather conditions are an absolute must. As it happens, the BMW M4 Coupé with its many BMW M Performance parts is naturally at its strongest in precisely these areas - and is light-footed thanks to its intelligent lightweight design. The BMW M4 Coupé DTM Safety Car's power is generated by the six-cylinder inline engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology and high-rev characteristics.

Back in the winter of 2013 a team of BMW M employees started work on converting the car from what was already a mightily impressive, roadgoing coupé to a safety car capable of taking a leading role in the DTM. The basic car was assembled at the BMW plant in Munich. From there, the BMW M4 Coupé went to the BMW M factory in Garching, where the assembly and modifications continued by hand. These included the technicians removing the rear seat of the car and installing a roll cage and Recaro racing seats with Schroth belts for its outings as a safety car. Furthermore, the car was also equipped with LED lights on the front apron, a radio communication system, LED lights on the roof and a special livery.

On top of all this came the extensive use of BMW M Performance Parts - from the exhaust silencer system, front splitter, black front grille, mirror caps, rocker panel attachment and rear spoiler to the rear diffuser, the technicians prepared the BMW M4 Coupé for its demanding outings on the racetrack. The modifications took about two months to complete. The BMW M Performance Parts installed offer an insight into how good the components, which are available to all BMW customers, can look.

NOVITEC TORADO and ADV.1 Wheels – two respected companies in the automotive industry - forged a cooperation and present an innovative idea for the world’s most thrilling super sports car: the new NOVITEC TORADO + ADV.1 NL2 high-tech forged wheel for the Lamborghini Aventador is now available in a limited edition of just 25 consecutively numbered sets of wheels. The objective of this cooperation between the high-end German tuning and refinement specialist NOVITEC TORADO and American high-tech wheel manufacturer ADV.1, was to incorporate a truly aggressive wheel design logically to the design and functionality of the Italian sports car. Each wheel is designed to only fit at one corner of the vehicle.

As the first product of this cooperation the two partners now present the NL2 wheels for the Aventador. The wheels have an aggressive design modelled after a wind turbine that features five unusually shaped double spokes.

The NOVITEC TORADO + ADV.1 NL2 wheels are designed to only fit one corner of the vehicle and as a result, the wind turbine styling feature with five slanted and extravagantly shaped double spokes is refined technically and visually in every detail. Conventional wheels with a wind turbine design have one major drawback: for cost reasons, only one tool is produced, which means that only the spokes on one side of the vehicle spin in the correct direction. On the opposite side the spokes are slanted against the direction of travel and visually seem to “break up the appearance” of the car. This design also impairs brake cooling and venting on one side of the vehicle. The wind turbine effect of the NOVITEC TORADO + ADV.1 NL2 wheels as they are produced, provide an optimal supply of cooling air and maximum dissipation of heat to enhance the braking performance. This not only benefits the performance, but the appearance of any Aventador fitted with these wheels.

The extravagant, markedly aggressive, appearance of the extremely lightweight two-piece wheels will be sold in a staggered sizing combination of 9Jx20 at the front axle and 12.5Jx21 at the rear axle, further emphasizing the wedge shape of the mid-engine sports car. The perfect high-performance tires in sizes 255/30 ZR 20 front and 355/25 ZR 21 rear are supplied for these exclusive sets of wheels by Pirelli, which will be manufactured in a limited edition of just 25 consecutively numbered sets and can be complemented with a paint finish adapted to the customer’s personal preferences.

Innovative ideas are what made NOVITEC the world’s leading tuner for Italian sports cars and only the best suppliers are good enough for our exclusive cliental. For this reason, NOVITEC TORADO, the corporate division dealing in the refinement of current Lamborghini models, now cooperates with ADV.1. With its high-tech forged wheels, the US manufacturer has earned a top position among the manufacturers of exclusive alloy wheels around the globe.

The new NL2 forged wheels allow NOVITEC TORADO to further expand its extensive tuning program for the Lamborghini Aventador. A program that ranges from a carbon-fiber aerodynamic-enhancement kit, various levels of engine tuning, high-performance exhaust systems with electronic sound management, precisely tuned coil-over suspension kits and exclusive cockpit refinements round out the performance and personalized upgrades.

To give the Lamborghini Aventador an even sportier appearance, the NOVITEC designers went into the wind tunnel to develop an aerodynamic-enhancement kit that is also available with a clear-coated carbon-fiber finish for its lightweight advantage and genuine racing appearance.

The front of the two-seater can be upgraded to an even more aggressive design with the two-piece NOVITEC TORADO front spoiler, the central front blade, newly designed air scoops and the redesigned trunk lid with integrated air ducts and new air vents. This creates optimal down force on the front axle and further improves handling stability at high speeds.

The NOVITEC TORADO side skirts, carbon-fiber mirror housings and redesigned side air scoops on the rear windows complete the aggressive side view of the vehicle with the new forged wheels.

The rear is shaped by the NOVITEC TORADO rear wing, which is available in two versions and increases down force on the rear axle. In addition, there is a special diffuser for the rear bumper, which can be expanded into a double diffuser with an extra component. NOVITEC TORADO fits the hood with larger air scoops and air vents, which are complemented by redesigned air vents in the rear components and consequently ensure a healthy temperature level in the engine bay.

Extensive calibration test drives on the racetrack and on public roads resulted in the development of the NOVITEC TORADO coil-over suspension components for the Aventador. The suspension components offer an adjustable ride height and adjustable damping to make the handling even more agile and direct.

It goes without saying that NOVITEC TORADO also offers various power output levels for the top-of-the-line Lamborghini model. Visually and acoustically the NOVITEC TORADO high-performance exhaust systems are a world apart. The exhausts have quasi three and a half tailpipes because the two center pipes are connected. They are available in stainless steel or the even lighter INCONEL material used in Formula 1 Racing. Customers can choose from versions with or without a controlled butterfly valve – optionally controlled at the push of a button from the cockpit. The program lineup also includes lighter and more efficient sports catalysts. In addition to optimizing power delivery, the NOVITEC TORADO high-performance exhaust systems also offer the option of saving up to 26 kilograms/57.3lbs in weight compared with the original equipment.

In the cockpit NOVITEC TORADO offers diversity with clear-coated carbon-fiber elements for the door trim and the dashboard. Interiors masterfully crafted from the finest leather and Alcantara can be ordered in any desired color.
